Five Stories of Entrepreneurs of Women with Disabilities

Miss Gloria was 5yrs old when diagnosed with polio but it did not stop her from helping person with disabilities like her. She knows that her disability is not a hindrance to her capabilities. She is serving the public for 4 years helping persons with disabilities in her own simple way by assisting them with their hospitalizations and medical assistance along-side her only daughter, Erica who helps her make wonderful pots and market them online. She and her daughter spend their earnings in helping others when in dire need. She learned her pot making ability through a workshop on Recycled Pot Making and the Digital Marketing Training conducted by Philcode Inc. which she encourages other person with disabilities to join. The duo also helps others by selling pots made by persons with disability to clients online. They are aiming to reach and employ more persons with disabilities and encourage them to join and help hand in hand; she is willing to teach them basic skills in pottery and is willing to help them market their work even at home. They had been successful with their pottery with different varieties depending on client’s request. They are not just helping nature but also helping our persons with disabilities in the community.

Miss Marilou was born with cerebral palsy, it was on her 3rd month when she was assessed with the said disability. But despite her having cerbral palsy, she was gifted with which helped her to be who she is today.  She underwent different kinds of physical theraphy and with her grandparents unstoppable support, she managed to overcome her struggles, she was able to move her hands, she can speak and sit properly. They told her that it was really up to her on how she will get better. Then on, it was when she made up her mind that despite her disability she was determined to help people like her, she teaches them art and how to paint in Equals and trained in the Pot Making Workshop held by Philcode Inc. in which an idividual can hone their skills, talents, promote their products and services. For Miss Malou, in an artistic perspective, one must have perseverance and vision to determine how one can handle self, how to communicate with nature, to God and other persons with disabilities. Miss Malou is currently in service for our people, she works as an office staff of PDAO in the municipality of Cainta. She is also the Chapter President of CPAP or Cerebral Palsy Association of the Philippines. Her sports is BOCCIA in which she once represented the Philippines in the ASEAN Paragames held in Thailand. She is now a freelance artist.

Miss Teresa Magante used to work as a Customer Service Representative in a BPO company but was terminated due to the strike of the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Philippines. After her termination, instead of feeling despair or miserable caused by the loss of her source of income, she knew better to get back up in spite of her disability, so she took part in the Recycled Pot Making Training by Philcode Inc. She urged her friends to do the same as they trained together to foster new talents and skills not only in pottery and the art of painting but also in business marketing. She and her friends applied what they’ve learned in the training and ventured in to the business. They are now recieving orders from different parts of Rizal and throughout NCR.

Miss Sue Peterson is a Person with Disability diagnosed with L5S2 spinal disc disease and Radiculopathy at the age of 52 due to an accident that occured on 2012. Because of the accident she had to leave a good paying job and coped with chronic lower back pain and instability of movements which was left undiagnosed till 2017 in addition to the dilemna of no permanent source of income. Having strong faith in God kept her depression at bay, she attended the affiliate marketing training and signed up in the mobile application of equals.org.ph. Last April 23, 2020 the Re-eco PH Social Enterprise has open its door for persons with disabilities who can market the products made by fellow Persons with Disabilities and Services for Persons with Disabilities. Ms Sue Peterson is hired as an affiliate marketer who works for 4hours a day flexible hours and a work from home arrangement and a 250.00 Pesos compensation for marketing the products and services. She is currently a CSR II in  crypto currency exchnge. She is indeed an example of a Power Woman who overcame her struggles despite of her disability.

Miss Sophia was just 9 months when she was diagnosed of polio. Despite of her disability and residing in the province with minimal support for persons with disability, she pursued what she wanted in life and continue her studies. Throughout with the guidance and help from her children she was able to push forward and prevail with what life has to offer. She used to be a Project Coordinator before she attended Philcode’s Digital Marketing Training wherein she learned how to market online using the strategies she learned on marketing products. She says that attending the training by PHILCODE was a big surprise for her. And with her eagerness to apply for a job right on she was hired as a project staff of PHILCODE. Now, she manages BOPC, an inclusive coop for persons with disability and using the skills she obtained during her trainings she managed to successfully maintain the business. So far she has been managing the store and is still marketing as of today.
